THE GENERALS AND THE POST-2011 DEMOCRATIC EXPERIENCE

That the Tunisian military would not seize power after the fall of the Ben Ali regime is in accordance with its corporate ethos. Every officer I met while researching the Tunisian armed forces expressed pride in la spécificité tunisienne, the tradition of a republican military respectful of civilian rule in a region plagued with military interventionism.16 Simply put, the Tunisian officers perceive putsches to be incompatible with military honor. In addition, as previously made clear, the members of the top brass do not have an economic agglomerate or prized appointments in the bureaucracy to protect. Nor could the military count on civilian support to topple Ennahda. The combination of all these factors meant that the military would confine itself to the barracks while Tunisia labored to consolidate its nascent democracy.
